1. ACLS OB is a full day in length, has its own agenda, evaluation form, and method of documenting course completion (CNE certificate for contact hours, when working with Provider Unit or Approver). This class is trademarked/copyright protected by St. Luke’s Health System. The content of the class is focused on recognition and adaptation of ACLS algorithms for the care of pregnant or newly delivered patients. The resuscitation science is based on ILCOR (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation) so is consistent with best practices (based on the best available evidence). This class contains a review of pathophysiology of pregnancy (what makes pregnant/newly-delivered patients high risk for an event?), review of cardiac structure/function (including an EKG review – as OB nurses are often uncomfortable with EKG interpretation), modifications for each of the “core” cases covered in ACLS (CPR, respiratory, MI, stroke, etc.) and finishes with a section about talking with families (ethical, practice, legal issues). This course utilizes its own manual (ACLS OB Provider Manual).
2. This class can be followed by a full AHA ACLS Provider course (~ 15 hours). This class has its own agenda, evaluation, and method of course completion (AHA ACLS Provider card – earned upon completion of AHA requirements). The Instructors teach the AHA ACLS content (adhering strictly to AHA’s guidelines) while adapting the cases/scenarios (as allowed by AHA) to meet the needs of the OB learners. This class uses the AHA ACLS Provider Manual.
ACSL OB and ACLS are not interchangeable. If your facility requires ACLS for your staff, ACLS OB will not be a substitution. The purpose of ACLS OB is to help nurses and other clinicians understand how, when, why to modify ACLS algorithms for care of the pregnant or newly delivered OB patient.
ACLS OB Provider Courses are available in Boise and can be delivered at your site.
St. Luke’s Health System owns the copyright/trademark protection and instructor classes can only be taught by St. Luke’s (either in Boise or at your facility).
