Estrogen and progestin therapy for menopause

Estrogen and progestin therapy for menopause

Estrogen and progestin therapy is a type hormone therapy (HT) that uses a combination of two hormones, estrogen and progestin. It can be used to treat symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. It replaces the hormones that drop during menopause.

There are certain health risks related to HT use. While most people don't develop health problems with HT, a very small number get breast cancer, stroke, or blood clots related to hormone use. HT may also increase the chance of heart disease or dementia.

Discuss with your doctor your health risks and treatment options for menopausal symptoms.
